Introduction
How do you keep your employees motivated, optimize team performance, and strategically align human resources with your organizational goals?
The Master of Science in Human Resource Management (HRM) aims to graduate students who are able to define, analyze, and evaluate issues related to the management of work and employment of people in organizations. In the MSc HRM, you will gain academic knowledge and skills to consider and explore how HRM policies and practices can be developed and applied. You will learn to do this by taking an evidence-based, scientific approach. This will prepare you for a professional HR career in any type of organization.
In the MSc HRM, you follow courses that cover both a strategic and a behavioral perspective of HR. You will learn to match the supply and demand of labor, both at a macro and micro-level and to anticipate internal and external changes that affect the management of work and people in an organization. You will learn about factors that play a role in this process (e.g. law, pay, leadership, and teams) and will have the possibility to expand this with other topics (e.g. stress & health, technological development, internationalization of business, or business ethics). You complete the program by performing research and writing a thesis.
Why study this program in Groningen?
Our master is an integral, specialized HRM program with a research-driven approach in which you learn to apply theory and scientific evidence to the practice of HRM. Both a strategic and a behavioral perspective of HRM is taken, with specific attention to leadership, team processes, and labor law. We offer a broad range of electives.
The program has been internationally accredited by the AACSB and EQUIS, ensuring a high-quality education, which only one percent of universities reach worldwide.
Research
Linking education to research and career preparation.
Our education is strongly research-based. Right from the start of your degree program attention is paid to academic research, since an analytical and critical mind and problem-solving capabilities are important qualities in any career our students aspire.
At the same time, a clear link with professional practice is made. In every course, through assignments, guest lectures, or other activities, students apply what they learn to the professional practice of HR. As such, students are engaged in preprofessional development.
The MSc HRM is linked to the research department of Organizational Behaviour. Members of this department perform research in the area of creativity and innovation, teams, diversity, leadership, ethics, compliance, and health. One example of our members is Prof. dr. Floor Rink. As a researcher on diversity, she focuses on the way that people with different opinions or backgrounds function within organizations. In this video, she explains how people with different opinions or backgrounds function within organizations, how to promote more career opportunities for minorities, and whether new employees really bring more innovation.
Please visit the website of the research institute Organizational Behaviour to learn more about the research conducted within the MSc program.
Curriculum
You will have ample opportunities to compose the program according to your own preferences. Compulsory courses are Strategic Human Resource Management, Personnel Instruments, and Research & Professional Skills for HRM. Five courses (Leadership, Work Design & Team Processes, Dutch Labour Law, International Labour Law, and Personnel Economics) form an elective group from which you choose at least three. Next to this, a wide range of electives is available.
The focus of the courses is on understanding and applying theories and principles that research has shown to advance the management of human resources in organizations. You practice adopting this research-based approach when you conduct your own research project.
The MSc Human Resource Management starts twice a year: in September and February.
