Top Masters of Science in Architecture Studies in North America 2019/2020

The MSc, or Master of Science, is a popular Master’s degree designation. Internationally recognized, the MSc is typically awarded after about five to six years of rigorous study in what is usually a science-based field.

Architecture is the trade by which buildings are designed and then built. This involves using technology, materials, and the environment in order to fulfill the requirements of the law and of those contracting the construction.

SCI-Arc’s Master of Science in Design Theory and Pedagogy one-year program prepares students for a new kind of hybrid career that has emerged in architecture: the architect-theorist-educator. (This program is pending WSCUC approval.)

The world is changing, and the formerly strict separation between architectural practice and academia is fading thanks to new research models at universities and new knowledge-based forms of practice. Yet despite the importance of this new role, academia has yet to produce a program to train talented young architects to occupy it; at traditional universities, there are separate programs to educate practitioners versus scholars.

The M.S. in Design Theory and Pedagogy program occupies a space in between these two known models and targets specifically a hybrid career in academia. Utilizing SCI-Arc itself as a hands-on teaching laboratory, the long-term project of the program is to develop new design pedagogies and a new apparatus for the production of design theory. The program requires attendance in the fall, spring, and summer terms.... [-]

Students in the Master of Science in the Design of Cities one-year program investigate the full depth and drama of contemporary urban phenomena and commit to design innovation.

Most of the world’s population now lives in cities; we are witnessing an astonishing and unprecedented process of urbanization on a planetary scale. The sheer complexity of this massive movement has put into question the validity of traditional urban design concepts. It is increasingly urgent for architects to think about how cities should be designed.

Against the conventional wisdom that cities are hopelessly complex, informal networks beyond the reach of any design model, this program fundamentally believes in the power of the architectural imagination to create sustainable urban designs for the twenty-first century and beyond.... [-]

The Master of Science in Architectural Technologies is a one-year program that provides hands-on experience with cutting-edge technologies of architectural production as well as a robust conceptual and critical framework.

Technologies come and go, but the general problem of technology and what we do with it as architects is perpetual. We cannot simply accept technologies as given to us from on high; as architects in the twenty-first century we must master existing technologies, develop new ones, and entirely rethink them in order to produce radical architectural effects.

Students acquire expertise in the realms of robotic fabrication, computational methods of form generation, additive manufacturing, and machine vision. In anticipation of future technologies that we haven’t yet seen and perhaps have yet to even imagine, the program also develops a robust conceptual and critical framework for understanding technology’s long-standing relationship to architecture in general.... The M.A. program in the Department of Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning (UEP) at Tufts prepares a new generation of leaders – ‘practical visionaries’ – who will contribute to the development of inclusive and sustainable communities.

A joint degree consists of one master's degree awarded by two graduate departments when a student meets the core master's requirements of both departments. Students may pursue a joint degree with the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in the School of Engineering. A dual-degree option (M.A./M.S.) is also offered by the departments of Civil and Environmental Engineering and UEP.

Students must be accepted into both departments in order to enter the joint degree program in UEP/Engineering Joint/Dual Degree. To facilitate the admissions process, however, a single application can be submitted on the Tufts' online application system by choosing the "UEP/Engineering Joint/Dual Degree" program. The application will then be reviewed concurrently by each department according to its own review criteria. The candidate's admission to UEP is not affected by the decision of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.... [-]
