Introduction
We are living through a time of immense digital transformation. To benefit society, science, and businesses, we need to develop the right tools to extract the full value from the ever-increasing growth of digital data. This interdisciplinary two-year master’s program will provide you with an understanding of the state-of-the-art methods and algorithms of data science through hands-on experience with the latest tools and systems in the industry. After graduation, you will be qualified to work in a range of positions in data-centered projects as well as pursue Ph.D. studies in data science.
Data Science is an emerging and multidisciplinary field that requires knowledge and skills in subjects such as computer science, mathematics, and communication technologies. During this program, you will get a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental aspects of data modeling, computational techniques, and statistical analysis. You will apply these skills to real-world problems and build a portfolio of projects demonstrating solutions to current business and societal challenges. You will have the opportunity to conduct original and innovative research, working with industry partners and academia during the capstone project course and thesis work.
The program is built around international research environments at the Department of Computer Science and Media Technology. The teaching staff includes experts in artificial intelligence, data processing and analysis, software development for big data and cloud architectures, modern software methodologies, and data visualization.
Admissions
Curriculum
Organization
The program deepens the student’s knowledge and skills in computer science and research methods in the field of data science — an emerging interdisciplinary subject at the borderlines between computer science, mathematics, and communication. The students will study and apply methods and algorithms that are used by data analysts and engineers working at the forefront of research.
The program covers the entire data management process from data collection through to data processing and analysis and ultimately to visualization and reporting of results. Students will use techniques within a variety of fields such as applied mathematics and statistics, machine learning, and cloud services for large data sets. They will translate their knowledge into practice by tackling real-life, data science-related issues and challenges that arise in both the private sector and society at large. In this way, students will build up a repertoire of tools and systems and the ability to determine how to use them to solve specific problems.
Program Outcome
Knowledge and understanding
In order to complete a master’s degree in Computer Science, the student must:
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of computer science, incorporating broad knowledge within the field as well as substantial, specialized knowledge within certain aspects of the field;
- Demonstrate in-depth insight into relevant research and development work; and
- Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of methodologies within computer science
Competencies and skills
In order to complete a master’s degree in Computer Science, the student must:
- Demonstrate the ability to critically and systematically integrate knowledge and to analyze, assess, and handle complex phenomena, issues, and situations, even with limited information;
- Demonstrate the ability to critically, independently, and creatively identify and formulate questions, to plan and execute – using appropriate methods – advanced assignments within specific deadlines and thus contribute to the development of knowledge, and to evaluate such work;
- Demonstrate the ability in both national and international settings to orally and in writing describe and discuss his/her conclusions and the knowledge and arguments on which these are based, in dialogue with different groups; and
- Demonstrate the skills that are required to take part in research and development work or for independent work in other qualified activities
Evaluation and approach
In order to complete a master’s degree in Computer Science, the student will:
- Demonstrate the ability within computer science to make assessments about relevant scientific, social, and ethical aspects, as well as demonstrating awareness of ethical issues in research and development work;
- Demonstrate insight into the opportunities and limitations of the science, the role these play in society, and the human responsibility for how this is used; and
- Demonstrate the ability to identify their own need for further knowledge and to take responsibility for their knowledge development
Career Opportunities
Graduates will enter the workplace with solid skills in managing, modeling, visualizing, and processing big data to provide insights to meet the growing needs of a digitized society. After graduating from this program, you will have developed competencies that are applicable across various sectors and application domains of data science such as computer science, technology, logistics, financial services, the internet of things, transport, business analytics, healthcare, gaming, and digital marketing and advertising analytics.
In addition, the program will prepare you for postgraduate education in computational-based science and technology — especially focused on data science — but also research and development work in related areas.
