Introduction
The Master of Science in Geosciences (with thesis) degree program provides a curriculum that is designed to be relevant to many of today’s career prospects, especially, for those completing the degree with a thesis. Opportunities to interact in a research context with select faculty are available for qualified students. Students can benefit from research programs, a renovated facility and several convenient evening academic courses. Geosciences is a long-established program at the University and traces its deep roots to the early 1960s.

Graduates of the program seek positions such as environmental scientist, petroleum geologist, development geologist, engineering geologist, exploration geophysicist, field geologist, geological consultant, geo technician, laboratory technician and radiation safety officer.
Thesis Option
All students seeking the Master of Science degree (thesis option) must satisfactorily complete the following requirements (a minimum of 36 graduate semester credit hours):
- GEOS 5315 The Earth: An Overview
- GEOS 5325 Remote Sensing Fundamentals or GEOS 6381 Geographic Information Systems Fundamentals
- GEOS 5375 Tectonics
- GEOS 5387 Applied Geophysics
A minimum of 15 semester credit hours of additional graduate courses.
A minimum of 9 semester credit hours of thesis research including GEOS 6398 Thesis and submit an acceptable thesis.
In addition to the above requirements, students seeking the MS degree (thesis option) must submit, no later than the second semester of enrollment, an acceptable degree plan, and a research proposal to their supervising committee. Upon completion of the thesis research, the MS degree candidate will publicly defend the thesis.
Non-Thesis Option
All students seeking the Master of Science degree (non-thesis option) must satisfactorily complete a minimum of 36 graduate semester credit hours including the specified Geosciences courses below.
- GEOS 5315 The Earth: An Overview
- GEOS 5325 Remote Sensing Fundamentals or GEOS 6381 Geographic Information Systems Fundamentals
- GEOS 5375 Tectonics
- GEOS 5387 Applied Geophysics
A minimum of 21 semester credit hours of additional graduate courses, to be selected in consultation with the graduate advisor.
Research: An 8000 level, 3-semester credit hour research course.
In addition to the above requirements, students seeking the MS degree (non-thesis option) must submit, no later than the second semester of enrollment, an acceptable degree plan.
Program Outcome
The graduate program prepares students for employment in the energy and environmental sectors, geospatial technologies in industry and government or academia. The MS degree (with thesis) is typically required as preparation for entry into a doctoral program at any university.
