Introduction
EDISS is a two-year Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree (EMJMD) programme delivered by four partner universities – Åbo Akademi University, University of the Balearic Islands, University of L’Aquila and Mälardalen University.
In the age of data explosion, both data scientists and software engineers work with creating processes that in one way or another deal with the vast amount of available data. However, many of these processes are still carried out independently of each other, which often leads to the creation of sub-optimal systems.
The EDISS programme aims to bridge the gap between data scientists and software engineers by offering a range of courses that give the student a basis for engineering data-intensive intelligent software systems. Students will thus become experts in integrating data science and machine learning solutions into software and system engineering processes, which brings them to the forefront of the next generation of professionals that shape industry and society in the 21st century.
Two years, two universities
All students in the EDISS programme begin the master’s degree programme at Åbo Akademi University in Finland. During the first year of the programme, students are offered a wide selection of courses that help them build strong theoretical tools to be able to master the skills, techniques and requirements of the second year specialization. The area of specialization will determine which country and partner university the student will relocate to for the second year of the programme.
Second year specializations include:
Industrial Machine Learning – Software engineering, hosted by Mälardalen University in Sweden.
Model Driven Machine Learning – Software Engineering, hosted by University of L’Aquila in Italy.
Computer Vision and Intelligent Systems, hosted by University of The Balearic Islands in Spain.
The EDISS programme is intended for students with a Bachelor’s or equivalent undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or equivalent subject. For more information on admission requirements and details about the application process,

Ideal Students
The next generation of applications will be the result of multiple worlds colliding: when application development meets artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things and big data analytics, intelligent systems are the outcome. The future of software is being driven by intelligent systems, that continually learn from user interactions and other data sources to become even more relevant and useful.
EDISS education specifically targets the need for experts who are both fluent in dealing with and understanding the unstructured big data and capable to integrate data science and ML solutions into software and system engineering processes.
Collaboration with renowned industrial partners, in the form of providing internship opportunities and mentorship, bring case studies and project topics to the lectures. Through the winter school students are exposed to the newest developments on the job market, and equips them with first hand practical experiences and valuable connections in their area of expertise.
Curriculum
First-Year Curriculum
The first-year courses focus on building strong theoretical tools for the students to be able to master the skills, techniques and requirements of the second-year specialization. The hosting university for all studies during the first year of the programme is Åbo Akademi University, Finland.
Besides the core data science-related courses, which are compulsory for all first-year students, Åbo Akademi University provides a list of courses that, based on their preferences and their future target specialisation, the students could choose up to 15 ECTS from.
In addition to the core data science-related courses, compulsory for all first-year students, Åbo Akademi University offers a list of courses that, based on their preferences and future target specialisation, students could choose up to 15 ECTS from.
Second-year specialisations
In the second year, the students will start their specialization based on the mobility path they have chosen:
- Industrial Machine Learning – Software Engineering, offered by Mälardalen University, Sweden
- Computer Vision and Intelligent Systems, offered by University of the Balearic Islands, Spain
- Model-Driven Machine Learning – Software Engineering, offered by University of L'Aquila, Italy
During the first semester of this second year, they will receive the required formal training needed for carrying out their master thesis as well as training on research methodology. During the last semester of their studies, the students will focus on implementing their master thesis work.
Career Opportunities
The job market has seen a significant growth in demand for expertise in data related fields. The expertise gained through the EDISS programme is still scarce among professionals in the field, a fact which serves as an advantage for graduates from the programme. The highly international nature of the programme and broad opportunities to network and gain practical experience through the programme internship and master’s thesis work can help facilitate opportunities after graduation.

Scholarships and Funding
EDISS offers very attractive scholarship opportunities to allow all students with an outstanding academic background to join our programme. Applications to the EDISS program and for Erasmus Mundus scholarships are completed simultaneously through one single online application.
The scholarships are available for non-EU and EU students, and the total amount of the scholarship varies according to the students’ nationality and place of residence. The EDISS participation cost is covered by the Erasmus Mundus scholarship through the participation costs for two years (24 months). Moreover, Erasmus Mundus scholarship holders will get a subsistence, travel and installation costs scholarships.
Detailed information about the Erasmus Mundus scholarships is available on the programme website.
