The School offers Masters programme in World Literature. The programme enables students to gain a broad acquaintance with a gamut of literature across the genres from around the world, transitions in the field of literary studies, literary and cultural texts, theories and methodologies of study as well as undertake coursework with specific, closely defined topics on a variety of literature and cultures and through a variety of materials. It explores literature and culture across languages, and investigates the intersections among literature, cultures, media, and disciplines, with a specific focus on South Asia and Southeast Asia. The programme offers a broad foundation for further research in literary and cultural studies. The mission of the curriculum is to provide students with a thorough grounding in the Humanities knowledge domains. Based on the interdisciplinary tradition of Nalanda University, the programme encourages the students to integrate insights and approaches from diverse domains into their studies. -

The course has been envisioned, designed and structured by the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Prof. Sunaina Singh. It is uniquely designed to grasp the rich spiritual as well as intellectual system of the Hindus – a distinctively interdisciplinary system where the textual and the oral, the verbal and the visual, the scientific and the metaphysical, the transcendental and the functional are interlocked as parts of a whole. The programme is offered by the School of Historical Studies (SHS). The School is a dynamic community of faculty members and graduate students, engaged in a systematic and rigorous enquiry into some of the fundamental questions that concern historical experiences within and beyond Asia. The School draws its inspiration from the glorious legacy of ancient Nālandā which served as a conduit of India’s vibrant intellectual linkages with the world for nearly a millennium. As is evident from the research profiles of its faculty, SHS is uniquely poised to train students in the cultural, religious and intellectual history of India and other regions of Asia from a comparative and cross-cultural perspective. -

The School of Buddhist Studies, Philosophy & Comparative Religion offers M.A. in Buddhist Studies, Philosophy & Comparative Religion and M.A. in Hindu Studies (Sanātana). The programme in Buddhist Studies emphasizes a deep and distinctive study of Buddhist ideas and values and historically contextualizes those ideas in relation to other proximal philosophical and religious traditions such as Vedic, Sankhya, Yoga, and Tantra. The programme in Hindu Studies is designed to enable the students to grasp the rich spiritual as well as an intellectual system of Hinduism – a distinctively interdisciplinary system where the textual and the oral, the verbal and the visual, the scientific and the metaphysical, the transcendental and the functional are interlocked as parts of a whole. Through an interdisciplinary/ comparative curriculum, the School examines the wider social-historical-cultural contexts of the development of Hindu and Buddhist traditions and the concurrent philosophical systems of Asia in general and of South and Southeast Asia in particular. -
