National University of Art Institute

Introduction

In its creation, at the end of 1996, seven prestigious tertiary and higher art institutions - the National Superior Conservatory of Music "Carlos López Buchardo", the National School of Fine Arts "Prilidiano Pueyrredón", the Higher School of Fine Arts of the Nation "Ernesto de la Cárcova", the National Superior Institute of Ceramics, the National School of Dramatic Art "Antonio Cunill Cabanellas", the National Superior Institute of Dances and the National Superior Institute of Folklore - came together to give life to what was then called the National University Institute of Art.

Its creation meant the realization of a long-delayed project whose criteria was to transform the artistic education dependent on the Nation based in the City of Buenos Aires into a university. The birth of the IUNA not only meant the adaptation of the old tertiary careers to make that leap to university status but also implied the development of new areas and careers to accounting for emerging languages or marginalized activities until the moment of university education.

In 2014, recognizing the disciplinary diversity that converged in the IUNA and its growth during the first eighteen years, the National Congress changed its name by law to the National University of the Arts.

Today at the National University of the Arts the Transdepartmental Folklore Area and the Departments of Musical and Sound Arts, Visual Arts, Dramatic Arts, Movement Arts coexist, whose history dates back to the middle or even the beginning of the last century, with the most recent: Department of Audiovisual Arts and Transdepartmental Areas of Teacher Training, Multimedia Arts and Arts Criticism.
