South Essex College

South Essex College is a vibrant and thriving College meeting the needs of around 11,000 students each year, throughout Essex and beyond.

From age 14 upwards we have courses that suit everyone including international students. We employ over 1,000 people and our courses are delivered by industry-trained, professional tutors at a choice of campuses in Basildon, Southend, and Thurrock.

Our values - PROUD

The College has six core values which underpin everything we do. Respect is at our core but is also embedded within the other five values: partnership, respect, outstanding, united, determined.

Strategic aims

Our strategic aims which set out our strategic plan for 2017-2020 are as follows:

  • Deliver high quality, inclusive teaching, learning, and assessment

  • Develop and grow a sustainable, viable, innovative, and responsive College

  • Attract, develop and maintain a highly skilled, innovative, and flexible workforce

  • Respect, promote, and celebrate diversity

  • Develop our work with stakeholders to improve the economic prosperity of the South East

  • Provide high quality, fit-for-purpose, accommodation, and resources

The College was founded in 1899 as an art school and was renamed later as the Junior Day Technical School. It was then restructured to include commercial and industrial provisions such as plumbing. The College became South East Essex College of Arts and Technology (SEECAT) in 1991.

In 2004, the College relocated to the campus in the center of Southend. On 1 January 2010, the College formally merged with Basildon and Thurrock College and was renamed South Essex College of Further and Higher Education.

In 2013 The Forum Southend-on-Sea opened which has an area dedicated to South Essex on the third floor. This area accommodates our Higher Education provision.

In 2014 our Thurrock campus relocated to a new building in the center of Grays.

In 2019 the College opened a new campus in Stephenson Road, Southend, which specializes in engineering and construction.

In February 2019 the College merged with Prospects College of Advanced Technology (PROCAT), a specialist engineering and construction provider based in Basildon, Canvey Island, and Ilford.
