Introduction
Have you enjoyed undertaking research during your degree? Do you think about a doctoral (PhD) study or a career in a STEM business, industry or academia? If so, our postgraduate Master's in Research (MRes) course will be a great start for you.
It aims to provide two key ingredients for early-career researchers – transferable research skills and expertise in your chosen subject. You'll undertake an original project with experienced supervisors and join the day-to-day life of a research group.
You'll develop the knowledge and skills needed to be an effective researcher and prepare a publication-quality manuscript, grant application and conference presentation.
You can start this course in October or February (full-time only in February).

To be considered for this Master’s Scholarship, you must be a UK student. Achieve, or have already achieved, a first-class honours degree, and:
- accept an offer on a full-time (including distance learning) MA, MSc, MPA, MRes or LLM course by Friday 1 July 2022, to start in September 2022
Courses starting in January 2023
To be considered for this Master’s Scholarship, you must be a UK student. Achieve, or have already achieved, a first-class honours degree, and:
- accept an offer on a full-time (including distance learning) MA, MSc, MPA, MRes or LLM course by 25 November 2022, to start in January 2023
Scholarships for 2022 and 2023 Portsmouth graduates
Courses starting in September 2022
To be considered for this Master’s Scholarship, you must be a UK student, achieve a first or upper second (2:1) honours degree from Portsmouth and:
- accept an offer on a full-time (including distance learning) MA, MSc, MPA, MRes or LLM course before Wednesday 1 July 2022, to commence in September 2022
Courses starting in January 2023
To be considered for this Master’s Scholarship, you must be a UK student, achieve a first or upper second (2:1) honours degree from Portsmouth and:
- accept an offer on a full-time (including distance learning) MA, MSc, MPA, MRes or LLM course before 25 November 2022, to start in January 2023
Master's in Architecture Funding
If you're studying MArch Architecture, you can usually get undergraduate student funding instead of postgraduate funding. Still, you'll need to start your MArch course within three years of completing your undergraduate degree.
MSc Social Work bursary
If you're a UK student studying an MSc in Social Work, you may be able to get a bursary from the NHS Business Services Authority. The bursary consists of a basic grant of up to £4,052 towards course tuition fees and £3,362 towards your living costs. You might also get a further maintenance grant of up to £2,721. You can apply for this bursary on the NHS Business Services Authority website.
