Introduction
Are you curious...
- How you can adapt computing devices to individual users?
- How you can think of entirely new approaches to the interaction between humans and machines?
- What AI can learn from us and what we can learn from AI?
If you’re interested in questions like these, then the Human-Computer Interaction Master’s program at Utrecht University might be it for you!
Why in Utrecht
Small-scale Master's Program
The Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) selective research Master’s program is a small-scale program with around 50 students per year. That means there’s plenty of attention for individual students, and the program has an informal atmosphere between students and lecturers.
Research Master's
As HCI is a research program, this will form a large part of the program. Two of the four mandatory courses focus on research methods. With their 40 EC graduation project, most HCI students conduct their research externally, often at a company.
Personalized Study Track
At the start of the program, you will be guided in the design of your personal study plan. You can choose from a broad range of courses, including topics such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), wearable and mobile computing, and persuasive communication. After your studies, you’ll be able to continue working in any one of these specific fields.
Program Outcome
Combines Information and Computing Science and Psychology
Computing is everywhere nowadays: from mobile phone apps and personal trackers to robots. All these devices must be adapted to individual users. This selective research Master’s program combines the perspectives of Information and Computing Sciences and Psychology to do just that.
Strong Links to Research
The program gives a solid methodological and technological basis, with strong links to research. Your research will center around the question: How can we best utilize technology in real-world settings? To find the answer, you will not only consider the effectiveness and efficiency of systems; but, also AI and user experiences.
You’ll work on three unique topics:
- Human-Centred Artificial Intelligence
- Personalized, Empathic Computing
- Persuasive Technology
You’ll test research theory in our three labs.
"Students in our program can rely on a solid scientific base while solving future challenges".
Egon van den Broek, Program Coordinator
Career Opportunities
After graduation
As a graduate of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), you will be ready to integrate human, computational, and technical skills in real-life contexts and will have no problem finding a suitable job, such as:
- ICT project manager
- HCI consultant
- Information analyst
- Multimedia designer
- UX professional
- Internet of the Things designer
- Ph.D. position
"In order to innovate in a meaningful manner, UX and HCI are indispensable".
