Introduction

Founded as the headquarters of the former Technical University of the State in 1961, the University of Magallanes is a public entity with a solid tradition in the Chilean university system and that develops activities of teaching, research, and connection with the environment that aim at the development of the region southernmost in the country.

It currently has an enrollment of close to four thousand students, focusing its activities on the University Campus of Punta Arenas, where its four faculties and the Institute of Patagonia are located, in addition to carrying out activities in the University Centers of Puerto Natales, Porvenir (Tierra del Fuego) and Puerto Williams, with an enrollment made up mainly of students belonging to the various communes that make up the Magallanes and Chilean Antarctic Region.

With a differentiating character, the University intends to be a national and international benchmark regarding the generation of knowledge in Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego, Sub-Antarctic and Antarctic territory, prioritizing, according to its development plan, areas such as : Human population in high latitudes; Antarctic and sub-Antarctic biodiversity, Energy and environment.

In the commitment to deliver a broad educational quality, our university is accredited until 2023 in the areas of Undergraduate Teaching, Institutional Management, Research, and Connection with the Environment, in addition to showing a significant increase in its careers in recent years accredited.

In this way, the University of Magallanes consolidates its mission as a Regional University of the State of Chile, fundamentally oriented to the formation of human capital in the Region of Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica; to the creation of knowledge, with special emphasis on research applied to the reality of Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego and Antarctica and the effective link with the regional environment.
