Arkansas State University Mid-South

Introduction

Originally established as a vocational-technical school, Mid-South Community College became a comprehensive community college in 1992 and began with 139 students in the fall semester of 1993. Today, like Arkansas State University Mid-South, we serve more than 1600 students annually in credit and non-credit training programs.

There are a thousand ways to express the ASU Mid-South culture, but we have chosen this starfish story because it relates so closely to what we do. Every time we help someone succeed, sometimes against what may seem like impossible odds, we are giving that person a new lease on life. We’re going to do whatever it takes to overcome challenges to deliver to our students the kind of results they need to change their life. It’s not just about going through the motions. It’s about doing whatever is required to ensure students can be successful. At Mid-South, we believe we have a moral obligation to take care of the people who live here. Just as the little boy knew he couldn’t save every starfish washed up on the shore, we know that we can’t save everyone. But every time we help someone towards a brighter future, we have won a major victory for that student. And it doesn’t just stop there. It’s also a win for their family, our community, our nation, and our world.
