Introduction

About McIntire

The McIntire School of Commerce is regarded as one of the nation's finest business schools, offering world-class programs at the undergraduate, graduate, and certificate levels. McIntire’s undergraduate program offers students a Bachelor of Science in Commerce degree; students may choose to concentrate in Finance, Accounting, Marketing, Management, or Information Technology.

In addition to its undergraduate program, McIntire offers five graduate-level programs. The M.S. in Commerce Program, a master's in management, is designed to prepare recent liberal arts, science, and engineering graduates for careers in business; the M.S. in Global Commerce, offered in partnership with two renowned business schools—ESADE Business School in Barcelona, Spain, and Lignan College at Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, China—gives recent graduates with undergraduate business degrees the opportunity to develop global business skills that can pay dividends throughout their careers. The M.S. in Accounting Program helps recently graduated accounting students sharpen the analytical and technical skills they need to excel in the field of accounting.

The M.S. in the Management of Information Technology (M.S. in MIT) Program is for early- to mid-career professionals seeking to advance their careers by bettering their understanding of the business-IT nexus; the M.S. in Business Analytics (MSBA), delivered in partnership with UVA’s Darden School of Business, provides expert preparation in the analytical, technical, and leadership skills necessary for transforming data sets into strategic decisions.

In 2019, the M.S. in Commerce earned a #1 ranking for “Best Master’s in Management” program in the U.S. by The Economist. In 2018, McIntire earned the #2 ranking among undergraduate business programs in the U.S. by business education website Poets&Quants. Shortly after, Poets&Quants named McIntire “B-School of the Year,” citing its prowess in alumni satisfaction, career outcomes, student experience, tuition ROI, and global curriculum. McIntire places immense value on offering students vital global perspectives and experiences, and are constantly expanding our global programs—and our footprint.

In 2019, Poets&Quants reported McIntire’s master’s programs may be “the most global” in the U.S. The School’s international learning opportunities are designed to ensure that students gain the skill the set they need to serve as a new generation of global business leaders. All students at McIntire have the opportunity to study internationally.

Mission Statement

At McIntire, our tradition is innovation. The School's mission statement, adopted in 2013, captures this McIntire mantra:

The McIntire School of Commerce is a professional school engaged in the creation and dissemination of knowledge that significantly influences the ideas and actions of students, scholars, and business leaders throughout the world. The McIntire School aspires to be the best, most innovative, globally focused undergraduate business program in the world and to offer high-quality, innovative, specialized master's degree programs, also with a global orientation. Two important elements of achieving program excellence and innovation are integrated and action-oriented learning and capitalizing on the strengths of its faculty, staff, students, and alumni through strong culture and community.

The five core principles of this mission statement are quality, innovation, integration, a global orientation, and community. These principles are consistently reinforced to faculty, staff, students, alumni, and corporate partners through McIntire faculty and staff meetings, bi-annual meetings with McIntire's governing boards composed of alumni and corporate partners, and McIntire's various communication vehicles that include McIntire magazines, yearly reports, and various forms of electronic media. These principles drive strategic decisions regarding programs, curriculum, faculty, staff, and student development. With a commitment to excellence, an innovative spirit, an integrative perspective, an appreciation of the globalization of business, and strong sense of community, the School's vision is to develop students into leaders who successfully live, work, compete, and contribute in the new global reality.

History

The University of Virginia was founded in 1819 by Thomas Jefferson. His vision of an "academical village," where scholars and students work closely together, remains paramount.

The McIntire School, founded in 1921 with an endowment from Paul Goodloe McIntire, strongly supports Jefferson's concept of an academical village. Its undergraduate business program has achieved a strong national reputation, and its graduate programs in Accounting, Commerce, Global Commerce and the Management of Information Technology are highly ranked by employers. Likewise, the McIntire Business Institute offers career-enhancing certificate programs for undergraduates, graduates, and working professionals.
